In April of 2015 the studio LIDEN FILMS released a teenage romantic-mystical anime series titled Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches (Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo). Season 1 of Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches debuted in Japan on the TV channels Tokyo MX, TV Aichi and TV Hokkaido on April 12, 2015 and also on the American online anime streaming service Crunchyroll.
The storyline of Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches takes place in an ordinary academy that has one unusual feature: according to a school’s legend, there are seven witches that are studying at the academy. Anyone who would find them will have a chance to make any wish, and the witches will make it come true. Another interesting twist is that the witches themselves are not aware of their magical status.
One local hooligan, a repeater Yamada, got lucky. It was him who accidentally discovered that a diligent and well-behaved pupil Shiraishi Urara is one of those witches. Her particular talent is to change bodies with people and the key to the transformation is a simple kiss. The couple began experimenting, and it turned out that the life of this straight A and diligent student is far from a fairy tale. As a result, these two become more interested in kissing than playing magical transformations. Soon, their secret gets revealed and the "witch hunt" begins.
Unfortunately, this cute and charming comedy anime has rather unimpressive graphics. The studio hasn’t released that many anime series independently yet. In addition, the same season the LIDEN FILMS studio is also releasing another project titled "(The) Heroic Legend of Arslan", which, apparently, has all the best talents occupied. However, if we take into consideration the fact that the decision to release Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches was based on high sales of the eponymous OVA, it may compensate for the flawed animation, and viewers will enjoy following the adventures of an unexpected tandem of a hooligan and an exemplary student.
It is quite possible that Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo will get renewed for a second season, but it won’t get released sooner than 2016, most likely in the summer season, in July.
